Debit/Credit Card Authorization Process
- 1. A cardholder makes a payment to a merchant, which can be done through a variety of methods:
- Card Present Transaction - The cardholder is physically present with their card and swipes, taps or inserts the card at a terminal.
- Card Not Present Transaction - The cardholder verbally gives the credit card data over the phone to a payment representative or via an IVR system.
- Card Not Present Transaction - The cardholder inputs the credit card data via an online payment screen.
- The payment solution (gateway) sends credit card transaction information to the merchant's MSP or acquiring bank.
- The MSP or acquiring bank sends credit card transaction information to the credit card network.
- The credit card network sends credit card transaction information to the cardholder's issuing bank and requests payment authorization.
- The issuing bank authenticates card information and if funds are available, sends an approval code or a decline message back to the card network. The issuing bank places a hold for the dollar amount of a payment on the cardholder's account.
- The card network sends the approval (authorization code) or the decline message back to the MSP or acquiring bank.
- The MSP or acquiring bank sends the authorization code or decline message to the merchant's payment software or gateway.
- The cardholder's payment is made (if approved) and the payment software or gateway sends a receipt of payment to the cardholder.
Often you may see that your card payment is made (if approved) and the payment software or gateway sends a receipt of payment to the cardholder. That costly process is why we all pay Interchange Fees and why Ottawa Valley RV Inc has unfortunately had to include a 0.035 percent Interchange Fee during the payment process for a service call of one type or another. We have added the partial amount of the fee that we have to pay for the credit/debit cards processing to help our small company offset some of our payables. We have always tried to be as transparent in our serviing and make the conscious decision that our payment processing be as transparent as best we can. We provide reputable servicing and want to keep you in the know.
Common Credit Card Processing Fees
Interchange Rates and Fees (Pass-Through Fees)
Card networks, such as MasterCard and Visa, set their own rates and fees. This includes what is paid out to the issuing bank for accepting credit card transactions.
All merchants must pay these fees, as they are non-negotiable. These fees are not set by us.
As a merchant one may see interchange fees itemized at a percentage plus a flat, per-transaction fee (such as 1.99% + .25).
We introduced the flat rate fee of 0.035% to keep your costs as low as we can and to help offset our costs. It is as low as we can offer at this time and hope it will help you in the ever increasingly tumultous times.
